Project Overview

Organisation

Thomson Reuters → Refinitiv → LSEG

Role

Principal Designer

Product

Eikon (legacy) → Workspace (next-gen platform)

Duration

Multi-year engagement across two periods of employment

Team

Supported by a Principal User Researcher (Prean P.), 2x Senior Visual Designers (John W. and Chris B.), and a dozen other UX Designers, Interaction Designers, a UX Engineer and Content Writer, a Business Analyst and Product Owner throughout various stages of work across all the projects stated in the documentation featured in this case study.

The Challenge

Thomson Reuters' Eikon was widely recognised as the primary competitor to the Bloomberg Terminal, offering institutional users powerful tools for financial data, news, analytics, and trading. Designed to provide a flexible and cost-effective alternative, Eikon stood out for its open architecture, real-time market data, and integration capabilities — making it a key player in the financial information services market.

During my time at Thomson Reuters (Financial & Risk Division), I led the UX design, redesign, and usability reviews of over 50 applications within the Eikon financial data and analytics platform. One of the most common user complaints was the platform's poor navigation and discoverability, both within and across applications.

On rejoining the company (now Refinitiv), I was brought in to help lay the foundations for a new, ground-up flagship platform—a modern successor to Eikon, capable of addressing legacy issues and supporting the evolving needs of financial professionals.

Designing LSEG Workspace

Strategic Foundation

This new platform, initially codenamed Eikon 5, would eventually become known as LSEG Workspace following Refinitiv's acquisition by the London Stock Exchange Group. My role as Principal Designer focused on shaping the platform and app frameworks to support:

  • Cross-platform compatibility (Windows, macOS, responsive layouts)
  • Personalised user experiences
  • Multi-role, multi-user, open-ended workflows
  • Flexible information density and theme support (light/dark mode)
  • Improved navigation and contextual search

Design System

& Visual Consistency

My first major assignment was to lead the design system initiative, originally called 'Halo'. I:

  • Collaborated with Senior Visual Designers to re-skin legacy Eikon interfaces to align with the new Refinitiv brand
  • Created a fully documented component library and design system
  • Established interaction patterns, layout rules, and design guidelines for future scalability

Responsive Breakpoints

based on Real-World Use

I conducted a comprehensive (and widely praised) analysis of user screen resolutions and device setups, particularly during the shift to remote work due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. This informed the definition of responsive breakpoints, ensuring the platform was optimised across:

  • Multi-monitor desktop setups
  • Laptop-only configurations (which saw a spike in usage during the COVID-19 lockdowns due to increase home-working)
  • Potential tablet and mobile use cases

Solving Navigation

& Workflow Challenges

To address long-standing navigation issues, I:

  • Proposed new application-level banners for clearer signposting
  • Created interactive prototypes to test navigation patterns
  • Conducted user research sessions with a Principal Researcher to validate improvements
  • Proposed improvements to the existing context-sensitive search model based on the Entity–Task–Parameter (ETP) framework to aid discoverability

Role-Based Personalisation

I pioneered the concept of a personalised homepage/start page — a feature not available in Eikon at the time — based on my deep understanding of diverse user roles within banking and finance. I proposed and presented the idea to stakeholders, where it was met with strong approval and enthusiasm. This feature dynamically displays content based on a user's:

  • Role
  • Focus area (e.g. Equities, FX, Commodities, Money Markets)
  • Preferences and most-used apps

Users were presented with interconnected cards and panels, offering relevant entry points into detailed applications and data views. This concept was enthusiastically received by product stakeholders and validated during user testing.

Results & Reception

One of my proposed workflows for Research Analysts received unanimous praise from both stakeholders and users. During user testing, feedback included:

“This is spot on. This is how it should have been built in the first place.”

My early contributions helped shape Workspace into a modular, scalable, and user-centred financial platform, replacing the ageing Eikon system and aligning with LSEG's strategic goals.

Evidence of Work

The section below is based on an official handover document I authored upon my departure, detailing the key projects I led across multiple teams. It highlights my responsibility for defining framework behaviours and design patterns at both the platform and application level for LSEG's new flagship product, Workspace — the successor to the legacy Thomson Reuters Eikon platform.

The content provides insight into the strategic and foundational contributions I made during my time at LSEG / Refinitiv.

Evaluation of Luca's ETP Concept

  • Luca's original designs: Figma design file
  • Background: Luca's ETP concept has several similarities to the ETP concepts I've been exploring such as finding ways to incorporate some form of smarter auto-suggest for search test entries, and mechanisms to navigate to other entities and/or tasks.
  • My Involvement:

    • Objectives:

      • Critique and validate Luca's concepts
      • Address concerns/questions raised by stakeholders (Brian S., Christiana A., Rohit M., Ray T.) over Luca's concepts
      • Design Exploration & Validations: Figma design file > Luca's Concept - Further Explorations & Validation - Aug-2021 (Yooch)
      • Status: Started but incomplete — Deviated from task to research and provide screenshots of other financial applications which use the same interaction model for changing entity in the header/banner, which provided a strong argument to stakeholders that we should explore the concepts further.

Note: It's standard practice not to name client companies, both to respect confidentiality agreements and to avoid exposing those relationships to competitive pressure.

Other Major Contributions

Application Design

Note: While not the focus of this case study, it's worth mentioning that I played a significant role in shaping many applications within the LSEG Workspace ecosystem — across its evolution from Thomson Reuters to Refinitiv and now under the LSEG brand. I led end-to-end design for several flagship apps, was frequently consulted by other designers for direction or review, and conducted final UX reviews before apps were released — ensuring usability standards, consistency, and quality across the platform.
